PSJA High, Weslaco High win District 32 wrestling titles
Comments 0 | Recommend 0WESLACO – At the surface, Weslaco High coach Miles Pedersen and PSJA High’s Rolando Becerra don’t have too much in common.
Pedersen, who coached at McAllen High last season is a highly-experienced coach who just last year had one of his wrestlers (180-pound Sam Mangum) win a state championship. Becerra, meanwhile, is just in his third year coaching PSJA and doesn’t look too much older than many of his wrestlers.
Both, however, ended Thursday’s District 32 meet as championship-winning coaches.
Becerrra and PSJA High claimed the boys championship in a tight competition, scoring 166 points and finishing first in four weight classes. Second-place Weslaco East scored 152 and had three district champions while PSJA Memorial came in third with 150 and four firsts.
The victory helped Becerra reach a goal he set when he first took over the Bears program.
“It’s always up to the kids,” Becerra said. “It’s something I’ve been striving for when I first got the job. I wanted the championship. It’s something good for the kids and it brings up their morale.”
The girls’ bracket was won by Pedersen and Weslaco, which scored 139 points and won at five weight classes. That was good enough to beat out Weslaco East, which finished with 128 and two district champs.
Of Weslaco’s nine girls wrestlers, all nine finished in the top 4.
“It’s really impressive,” Pedersen said. “I’m really happy for them.”
The top-two finishers in each weight class qualified Thursday for next weekend’s regional competition in San Antonio.
