Hawks reach semifinals at team tennis regional
The Harlingen South Hawks won both of their matches Friday at the Region IV-5A Team Tennis Tournament at the HEB Tennis Center in Corpus Christi and are in the semifinals.
"We had a pretty good day, we played pretty well," South coach Noe Stillman said. "Today, we played a lot better, much more focused."
The Hawks, who are seeded second, beat McAllen High 10-0 in the first round and took care of San Antonio Clark 10-1 in the quarterfinals.
They will play fourth seeded San Antonio Reagan in the semifinals. Top seed New Braunfels and No. 3 San Antonio Churchill will play in the other semifinal. Those matches will be this morning, with the final in the afternoon.
"We’ll get some rest tonight and get ready to go in the morning," Stillman said. "We’ll have to play well. If we play well, we’ll have a good shot at winning that."
Elsewhere, District 32-5A champion Brownsville Hanna beat San Antonio O’Connor 10-2 in the first round before losing to New Braunfels 10-1 in the quarterfinals. Their fellow 32-5A team, Brownsville Rivera, lost to Laredo Alexander 10-0 in the first round.
PSJA North, which took second place in 31-5A behind South, lost to New Braunfels 10-0 in the first round.
Sharyland, which won 30-5A, beat Laredo United 10-0 in the first round. The Rattlers then fell to Churchill 10-0 in the quarterfinals.
Up in San Antonio at the Region IV-4A Tournament at the Alamo Heights Tennis Center, Roma won its first round match over Kerrville-Tidy 11-3.
The Gladiators then lost to 10-3 to Austin Vandegrift in the quarterfinals.
"Kids played well," Roma coach Eddie Marquez said. "But they were the better team."
Mercedes, which came in second in 32-4A, lost to Austin Lake Travis 10-1 in the first round. Both teams will continue play in the consolation bracket today.
