Harlingen's Bermea waiting to ink letter of intent
HARLINGEN — The most anticipated national signing day signing in the area will have to wait at least one more week.
As most prep stars sign their letters of intent to compete at the next level today across the country, Harlingen’s Randy Bermea will wait a few more days to make his final decision.
Bermea, who visited LSU, Kansas State and Ole Miss, has narrowed his decision to Texas Tech and University of California-Berkeley.
Bermea will sign to compete in track and field, specifically the hurdles.
Bermea starred at receiver for the Harlingen Cardinals and played safety in the playoffs. But since his freshman year, Bermea’s been destined for greatness in the hurdles.
Last year, Bermea broke Valley records in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.
Bermea went on to win a silver medal at the UIL State Track and Field Championships in Austin last May. He also won a bronze in the 300 hurdles the same day.
A month later, Bermea was invited to a national track and field meet in North Carolina, where he ran the 400-meter hurdles for the first time ever.
Despite making his debut in the race, Bermea finished third in the nation.
Bermea enters the 2012 track and field season as one of the top performers in South Texas.
In football, Bermea helped lead the Cardinals to 13-1 record and a state quarterfinals appearance.
Hard-hitting safety Daniel Ramirez could be making a decision soon as well but he won’t be ready to sign today.
It wasn’t specified, but there were some Division I and II schools looking at Ramirez.
In Mercedes, offensive lineman Grady Young will sign a letter of intent today to play football at Mary-Hardin Baylor University in Belton.
In Los Fresnos, offensive lineman Christian Rodriguez is expected to sign a letter of intent to play football in next few days. He’s excepted to play at the Division II level.
In McAllen, Bulldogs kicker Jose Arzate will sign a letter of intent today to play football at West Texas A&M University in Commerce.
