Hanna turns on the jets in win over Bobcats
Comments 0 | Recommend 0BROWNSVILLE - Brownsville Hanna turned a slow start into a fast-paced, confidence-building 90-78 non-district victory as the Golden Eagles raced past Edinburg High 90-78 on Tuesday night at the Hanna gym.
The Eagles (4-3) fell behind 10-0 at the start and trailed 23-13 after one quarter, but they more than made up for it by outscoring the Bobcats 31-15 during the second period for a 44-38 advantage at halftime.
Leading by double digits for much of the second half, Hanna outpointed the Bobcats 25-24 in the third quarter and 21-16 in the final period as the Eagles' Mario Castañeda highlighted the win with 33 points, including seven 3-pointers.
"We knew coming into the game that Edinburg is a running-style team, and we like to play that style of game as well," veteran Hanna coach Don Denson said. "We knew they were going to have their runs, and we were hoping that we were going to have more runs than they would. It just so happened in this game that we did.
"We have a lot of sophomores on our team, and a win like this gives us some more confidence going into our next ballgame, that we can step up and face the challenge," he added.
Hanna's Anthony Garza and Ryan Jordan added 16 and 15 points, resepectively.
For the Bobcats (2-2), Jaime Acuña led the way with 19 points. Chris Flores and Aaron Olvera added 16 and 11 points, respectively.
The Eagles' biggest lead of 17 points came with 2:45 left when Castañeda hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it 87-70.
The Eagles next play Houston St. Thomas on Friday morning in the South Padre Island Tournament, while the Bobcats next face either Sharyland or St. Joseph in Edinburg's Craig Smith Tournament, also on Friday.
