Harlingen High, PSJA North receive team of week honors

The Harlingen High Cardinals and the PSJA North Lady Raiders are the recipients of the Team of the Week presented by RGVSports.com, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the Rio Grande Valley Basketball Officials Chapter and Academy Sports & Outdoors.

For their efforts, the Cardinals and Lady Raiders will receive passes to the Saturday, Feb. 11 game between the Vipers and the Austin Toros at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo courtesy of Academy Sports & Outdoors. In addition, the Cardinals and Lady Raiders will be recognized on the court before the Vipers and Toros tip off.

“This gives the Rio Grande Valley Vipers an opportunity to not only give back to the community but to be able to showcase Valley high school basketball,” Vipers President Bert Garcia said. “The opportunity for our fans to learn more about our high school players is something we look forward to.”  

Harlingen High (22-6 overall, 6-3 District 31-5A) won two district games last week, including a resounding 72-43 victory at No. 4 Edinburg North on Friday. The Cardinals host Edinburg Economedes on Tuesday night.

Charlie Powers’ game-high 18 points against Edinburg North led five Cardinals in double figures.

PSJA North (24-7, 9-2 District 31-5A), meanwhile, clinched the first playoff berth in the program’s history with a 56-40 win at Harlingen South on Friday. Ileen Torres scored a game-high 23 points in the win, while Cassie Aleman leads the Lady Raiders with 13.4 points per game. PSJA North hosts Edinburg North on Tuesday night.

The RGVSports.com All-Valley Showcase, presented by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and the Rio Grande Valley Basketball Officials Chapter, will take place April 7 at State Farm Arena. The Showcase is a high school all-star game featuring the RGV’s best players regardless of classification.
