Tamen struggles, Gonzalez surges at 5A golf tourney
It was not the ending Jessica Tamen envisioned.
The Edinburg High junior had five bogeys and one double bogey in a rough Day 2 at the University Interscholastic League Class 5A Golf Tournament on Friday at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.
She finished with a 7-over 79 on the day, which combined with her 2-over 74 on Day 1, put her at a 9-over 153 for the tournament. She ended up tied for 12th place, 14 shots back of Austin Westlake’s Sierra Sims, who won the tournament with a 5-under 139.
"It’s a very good tournament," Edinburg High coach Orlando Garza said. "She’s happy with herself, she competed, she knows she has work to be done for next year."
On Day 2, Tamen, who started on the back nine, bogeyed 11, 15 and 17 to head into the turn 3 over par. She then started the front nine with a bogey on 1, then followed that with a double bogey on the par-5 4th hole. Another bogey on 8 closed out her day.
"She wasn’t hitting the driver as well as she had all this time," Garza said. "That’s not typical of her play"
Still, it was Tamen’s second straight trip to state, and once again, she was glad to represent the Rio Grande Valley.
"She did a great job," Garza said.
Meanwhile, Papito Gonzalez had a stellar Day 2, shooting a 1-under 72 to finish in 18th place with a 5-over 149. He was 17 strokes back of Dallas Jesuit’s Jordan Spieth, who ran away with the tournament with a 12-under 132.
The McAllen Memorial sophomore birdied the par-3 second to start his day on a high note, then followed that with another birdie on five. Bogeys on six and eight followed, but a birdie on nine sent him into the turn 1-under.
Gonzalez then bogeyed 11 before a string of pars set in. However, he closed his round with a birdie on 18 to finish even on the back nine.
"I started making puts, I didn’t make any puts yesterday," Gonzalez said. "I started playing my game"
"I got a rhythm today, a lot better," he added. "I felt more confident."
Gonzalez had a rough Day 1, finishing with a 6-over 78, but rebounded toward the end and carried that momentum over to Friday.
"We’re ecstatic right now, he could have folded," Memorial coach Celso Gonzales said. "He came back … I couldn’t be prouder of him."
Teamwise, Mansfield won the boys side with a 575. Westlake claimed the girls title with a 591.
