Progreso girls capture 32-3A golf championship
HARLINGEN — In Progreso, they call them the Fab Four.
And on Wednesday at the District 32-3A golf tournament, they were indeed fabulous.
Playing with only four girls on the team, the Progreso Lady Red Ants golf team repeated as district champions with a team score of 442. La Feria was second with a score of 476.
Progreso golf coach Rick Salinas said all the credit for the win should go to the girls and their effort.
“It’s hard at a place like Progreso because we have to share athletes,” Salinas said. “But we have girls with a lot of heart and it helps that they understand the game. I treat them like athletes and it makes no difference, I treat tournaments like it’s Friday nights in the fall.”
Junior Melissa Torres took medalist honors for the Lady Red Ants with a score of 98. As a matter of fact, the top three individual scores came from Progreso. Katherine Wolfe was second with a 110 and Sandra Garcia was third with a 111.
“I treat them like my linebackers,” Salinas said. “I’m not soft on them. We didn’t have the best day today but we regrouped and pulled it off.”
On the boys’ side, Zapata senior Jorge Serna won the individual district title and helped the Hawks to the team title with a score of 345. La Feria also took second in the boys group with a score of 387.
Serna shot a 78 to top the leader board. La Feria’s Andrew Garcia shot an 80 and Zapata’s Albert Gutierrez was third with an 81.
For Serna, the district title added to an already big week. On Tuesday, Serna and his Tejano-Norteno band Grupo Zamorales signed a record deal with Freddie Records.
Serna, who plays drums in the band and carries a 4.0 GPA academically, said he likes to combine his love for music and golf on the course.
“I try to keep a tune in my head while I’m playing,” Serna said. “It’s a lot like drumming. I try to keep a certain pace and timing by playing a song in my head while I’m playing.”
