Peña to report to Red Sox affiliate
The wait is finally over for Miguel Peña.
Rob Martin, Peña’s adviser, said Thursday the former La Joya High star pitcher has agreed to a contract with the Boston Red Sox. Peña still needs to pass a physical, but will report to the short-season Single-A Lowell Spinners in time for their season opener tonight.
“Everything went smoothly,” Martin said of the negotiations. “The Red Sox are excited.”
Terms of the deal will not be formally disclosed until Peña formally signs. The expected signing bonus for a sixth-round selection this year is believed to be slightly below $100,000.
Last week, Peña was drafted 202nd overall by the Red Sox. This was the third time he was drafted. Two years ago, Peña was a fifth-round selection by the Washington Nationals but didn’t sign. In 2010, the San Diego Padres selected Peña in the 13th round but he chose to return to San Jacinto Junior College.
If Peña hadn’t signed, he would have headed to Lubbock Christian University on a full scholarship offer.
