Edcouch-Elsa using 7-on-7 state tournament to prepare for season
Comments 0 | Recommend 0EDCOUCH - Every year, Joe Solis gives his usual explanation on how 7-on-7 tournaments get his Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjacket squad ready for the upcoming season.
That notion couldn't be truer this season, especially at the quarterback position after E-E lost Erik Niño, who accounted for more than 3,000 yards of offense in 12 games and helped La Maquina win its sixth straight District 32-4A title last season.
Like he's done in the past, Solis searched for and found a new signal caller he hopes Yellowjackets fans can buzz about the next few years. During the spring, Solis worked with some candidates, including running back Roger Garcia, but after consideration the seventh-year coach has given nod to Ryan Garza.
"Put it this way, if we were to play this Friday, (Garza) would be our starting quarterback," Solis said.
The incoming junior has taken all the snaps in the two tournaments in which the 'Jackets have participated and helped the team qualify for the 12th Annual Fox Sports Net 7-on-7 Division I state tournament, which starts today and concludes Saturday in College Station.
Garza was impressive in the Mission tourney, in which the Yellowjackets beat the home team 20-13 in the title game. At the same time, Solis knows the competition upstate will be stiffer and faster, which in his eyes will be good for his new QB.
"We feel our quarterback has been able to throw into coverages that are quicker," Solis said. "The tournament also helps with the timing and completions.
"He knows the offense. It's a matter of playing time, but he's getting that with the 7-on-7 tournaments."
Garza also has enjoyed the privilege of learning from former E-E quarterback Jorge Rubio, who was a standout from 2005-06 and also is the head coach of this year's 7-on-7 squad.
"I'm real happy he volunteered, the kids look up to him," Solis said.
According to the league's Web site, Edcouch-Elsa is in Pool J along with state powers Birdville, Lewisville Hebron and Temple in the 64-team tourney. Saturday's matchups will be determined by Friday's results.
This marks the fourth straight year the Yellowjackets have gone to state. Last year they lost in the quarterfinals to Stephenville.
Solis said his players rebounded very well after they struggled in their home tournament, losing to district foes Mission High and Mercedes.
But in the Mission tourney, the Yellowjackets rebounded with wins over Weslaco High, McAllen Memorial, Mission Veterans Memorial, Edinburg High and Mission High in the title game.
"These kids feel confident that they can win these games," Solis said.
