Palmview girls dominate Rattler Relays
RIO GRANDE CITY — It’s safe to say the La Joya Palmview Lady Lobos track & field team had a strong showing to open the 2011 season Friday at the Rattler Relays at Joe R. Sanchez Stadium.
Palmview won the 400-meter relay (51.38 seconds), the 800 relay (1:52.54) and the 1,600 relay (4:23.24) and won individual events in the long jump, triple jump, 100 dash and 200 dash.
If there was any disappointment, it was that the only other District 30-5A teams to show up were Mission High and La Joya High. Palmview feels as if it has improved this season and can maybe compete with defending district champ Sharyland.
“I know that (Sharyland) lost some kids that were big for them,” Lady Lobos coach Caludia Bazan said. “We are hoping to give them a run for that title.”
Any comparison will have to wait until later in the season. On Friday, it was more about shaking off the rust. For the most part, Palmview did a good job of that.
“I know a lot of the girls were coming in here looking to break personal records,” Bazan said. “This was not the right place for it right now.”
Rio Grande City decided not to keep team results for the meet and did not have prelims. The Lady Lobos, though, would have been in the running for the team title.
Kimberly Ochoa won the triple jump with a mark of 33 feet, 3 inches. Stephanie Peña finished first in the 100 with a time of 12.99. Cinthia Flores was a double winner Friday, taking first in the long jump (16-4) and in the 200 (26.97).
Flores was also on the winning 400- and 1,600-relay teams.
“I didn’t know how it was going to go,” the senior said about Friday’s meet. “I’m glad with the way it went.”
Another top perfomer on the girls side was Mission High’s Taylor De La Rosa, who recently signed with McNeese State in Louisiana. She won the 800 (2:25.30) and the 1,600 (5:36.98). The 800 time set a meet record.
On the boys side, Rio Grande City’s Alex Garza dominated the throwing events. Garza, who won Class 5A state gold in the shot put last season, finished first in the shot (59-9) and in the discus (163-3).
RGC’s Erik Diaz won both the 110 hurdles (16:05) and the 300 hurdles (42.87).
