Sharyland boys, girls continue dominance at 'Cats Relays

EDINBURG — For the third time in as many weeks, the Sharyland boys and girls track & field teams swept an event.

On Saturday, the teams won the ’Cats Relays, both in dominating fashion. What may seem like a broken record to others is really music to Sharyland’s ear.

“The girls are just trying to go out for (personal records) now,” Lady Rattlers coach Sandra Guerrero said. “They are just very determined and pumped up about the season. We have a lot of vets with experience that have been doing this for awhile. They want to be doing their best.”

Their best in the 3,200-meter relay was a school record. The Lady Rattlers’ time of 9:50.09 was 10 seconds better than the previous mark.

During that race, the Lady Rattlers had fallen to third, about 100-meters behind the leader. The team’s anchor, Estephania Contreras, made up the distance to secure the win.

The Lady Rattlers finished first in nine events en route to 218 points, which was 138 points better than second-place Edcouch-Elsa (85).

Sharyland also produced the top female athlete at the meet, Jessica De Luna. De Luna participated in five events winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.09 seconds.

“We just try to get better every week,” De Luna said. “We are not competing against other teams; we are competing against ourselves and our times.”

Lady Rattlers hurdler Kayla De La Peña won both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles with times of 15.69 and 46.63, respectively.

The boys team also won handedly, scoring 159.3 points. Edinburg North finished second with 123. The Rattlers won six events.

Their only two-time individual winner was Estevan Hernandez, who won the 110 hurdles (15.20) and 300 hurdles (41.09).

“I’m very happy where we are at this time,” Rattlers coach Tom Lee said. “We are not where we want to be. Our kids are hungry. We have a lot higher goals than what we are doing right now.”

McAllen Rowe’s Rommel Benavidez was named the top male athlete. Benavidez won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.76. The Warriors standout also placed second in the high jump with a mark of 6-foot-2.

“I’m supposed to be getting better,” Benavidez said. “I improved my times and my jumps every single time.”
