The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College men's golf team kept a talented local golfer in the Rio Grande Valley as Matthew Cadriel signed a conference letter of intent to play for the Scorpions during a signing ceremony Tuesday at the Garza Gymnasium Annex.

Cadriel, a senior from Hanna, was the MVP of District 32-5A in 2009 and a first-team all-district selection. He was the district medalist in 2009 and a first-team All-Valley selection.

"Matt has the ability to make an instant impact on our team," UTB-TSC golf coach Robert Lucio said. "My hope is that he will adjust to the university level and not put too much pressure on himself too soon."

Cadriel also was the South Texas Golf Classic champion in 2008.
