McAllen Memorial, King win again at Pre-Regional Showcase

The results were familiar at the BISD Pre-Regional Showcase on Saturday morning in the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center.

The McAllen Memorial boys team won its second straight title in the meet with 340.5 points and was followed by Brownsville St. Joseph with 259 points. The Corpus Christi King girls also defended their title, winning with 447 points over Hanna, which had 300 and finished second for a second consecutive year.

The McAllen Memorial boys team won six events, including the boys 200 medley relay (1:47.59), the boys 100 backstroke (55.38), the boys 500 freestyle (5:05.23) and the boys 400 freestyle relay (3:27.14). Individually, the Mustangs’ Juan Rocha de Murga won the 50 freestyle (22.55) and William Holmes took the 100 freestyle (49.60).

Other boys winners included Los Fresnos’ Joseph Linck in the 200 freestyle (1:52.56) and the Falcons’ 200 freestyle relay (1:35.09) team. Rigo Abrego won both the 200 individual medley (2:07.08) and the 100 butterfly (56.01) for Edinburg Economedes. Robert Cavillo won 1-meter diving (332.90) for Mission High, and Tyler Gomez won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.22) for Mission Veterans Memorial.

The King girls won three events, the 200-yard medley relay (1 minute, 58.42 seconds), 200 freestyle relay (1:45.08) and Amanda Alvarez won the 100 backstroke (1:04.07).

The Hanna girls were big winners Saturday, taking four events. Ayme Saldana finished first in the girls 200 freestyle (2:06.52), as did Kelley Jimenez in 1-meter diving (301.35), Natalie Castillo in the 100 butterfly (1:04.33) and as a team in the 400 freestyle relay (3:57:58). Justin Villarreal (2:24.01) won the boys 200 individual medley for the Eagles.

Sophia Grossweiler won the 200 individual medley (2:22.20) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.75) for McAllen Rowe, and Kristen Underbrink won the 50 freestyle (25.54) and the 100 freestyle (54.73) for Corpus Christi Carroll. Christine Gozdalski won the 500 freestyle (5:48:25) for Harlingen South.

A participant high of 738 athletes, aquatic center coordinator Monica Rosales said, competed in the two-day event in preparation for the regional, which will be held Feb. 10 and 11 at the aquatic center.
