San Benito blanks Porter
SAN BENITO — San Benito head coach Spencer Gantt unleashed the ’Hounds on Friday night as they took a bite out of the Porter Cowboys 44-0 at Bobby Morrow Stadium in San Benito.
With the win, the Greyhounds improve to 2-1 in District 32-5A and 3-3 overall. Porter falls to 0-3 in district play and 0-6 overall.
“Unleash the ’Hounds, I like that title,” said Gantt. “I like what I saw on both sides of the ball and the kids were hungry tonight. There was a lot of enthusiasm on the field and the kids had fun. I am very proud of them.”
The Greyhounds got on the board first 6-0 as they blocked a punt deep in their own territory and Polo Martinez picked it up and ran it in from seven yards out with 11:25 left in the first quarter.
San Benito increased its lead to 13-0 as quarterback Brandon Marquez hit Ralph Sanchez on a 15-yard touchdown strike with 7:01 left in the first quarter. The touchdown was set up by a 69-yard pass from Marquez to Chris Preciado which gave the Greyhounds the ball at the Porter 17. Marquez also scored on a 25-yard run.
After two costly penalties by the Greyhounds, the offense was able to convert as Anthony Lopez ran down the middle of the field 48 yards to the house as they extended their lead to 27-0 with five seconds left in the first quarter. The Greyhounds continued to pile it on 37-0 when JC Guzman ran it in from 14 yards out with 4:30 left in the first half. Tommy Herrera drove the nail in the coffin as he scored on a 16-yard touchdown run with 5:26 left in the third quarter.
San Benito’s defense completely overpowered Porter’s offense as they held the Cowboys to 157 yards of total offense while the ’Hounds offense chewed up 481 yards.
Next week the Greyhounds have a date with the Los Fresnos Falcons and Gantt said he is not going to worry about next week just yet.
“We are going to talk about next week right now,” said Gantt. “We are going to enjoy this one right now and celebrate the win.”
