Mission continues its hot start by blowing past McCollum
SAN ANTONIO — Behind a defense that forced five turnovers and held San Antonio McCollum to 53 total yards, the Eagles rolled to a 30-7 win. The No. 5 Eagles are now 2-0 and building momentum toward what many expect to be a District 32-4A championship season.
Coach Mario Peña said he is already seeing signs that tell him the 2009 Eagles could be a special team.
“Without a doubt. We just need to start getting it clicking on all phases of the game,” Peña said. “We can’t play on one side. We all need to be clicking together.”
Though the Eagles weren’t perfect, they are certainly clicking better now than they were at this time last season. In 2008, the Eagles stuttered to an 0-3 start in non-district play. Peña, in his first year at Mission, has stressed getting off to a better start.
So far, it seems like the Eagles are listening to his message.
“I’m real proud of the kids,” Peña said. “I want to say one thing I’m very proud of is the fact we’re playing 48 minutes.”
